NEW STUDY PROVES YOU NEED TO SEE A BARIATRICIAN TO LOSE WEIGHT!!!
DENVER - The most recent issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (July 17, 2008) contains an important article entitled, “Weight Loss with a Low-Carbohydrate, Mediterranean or Low-Fat Diet.” The authors report on a two-year study of 322 “moderately obese” patients who were randomly assigned to one of three diets and then followed closely for two years.
The main finding of the study was that patients lost weight on all three diet programs. Those on the low-carbohydrate plan lost the most weight, on average. The authors conclude that “personal preference and metabolic considerations might inform individualized tailoring of dietary interventions” and that each of the diets has equal merit.
“The authors of this study have confirmed that non-surgical weight management is effective and safe,” said Dr. Mary Vernon, Chairman of the Board of The American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP). “Our association provides the training that physicians and other health professionals need in order to properly diagnose and treat obesity and related metabolic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes.”
Bariatric physicians – also known as bariatricians – practice weight loss/management by medical (non-surgical) methods including diet, exercise, behavior modification and medication. ASBP is the leading professional organization representing physicians and other health professionals who provide medical management of weight loss and associated metabolic conditions.
ASBP has developed and promoted Bariatric Practice Guidelines which provide a framework that helps to ensure a high standard of medical practice. These guidelines define the most appropriate procedures for assessing, counseling and treating patients with weight management issues and associated medical conditions.
ASBP provides a network of experienced bariatric practitioners as a resource for members to access when assistance is needed in the management of challenging cases or difficult clinical issues.
